FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about lactation support and insurance coverage

Does insurance cover lactation consultations?

Yes — most major insurance plans are required to cover IBCLC lactation consultations under the ACA. We're in-network with Anthem, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Oscar, Cigna, Health Net of CA, and more. Insurance typically covers 6–9 visits. Fill out our form and we'll verify your specific benefits within one business day.

What's the difference between an IBCLC and a regular lactation consultant?

An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is the highest credential in lactation care, requiring 1,000+ hours of supervised clinical experience and a board exam. Many hospital-based 'lactation consultants' are not IBCLCs. Our team includes multiple board-certified IBCLCs, so you're getting gold-standard care.

Do you do home visits?

Yes. In-person consultations are available at our Encinitas office inside New Mom School, or we come to you throughout North County San Diego — including Carlsbad, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, and more. Telehealth is also available statewide.

My baby was diagnosed with a tongue or lip tie. Can you help?

Absolutely. We provide assessment and hands-on feeding support before and after revision procedures. Our team has extensive experience with tethered oral tissue (TOT) — helping you understand what it means for your feeding and what to expect throughout the process.

What if my issue is more about my diet and milk supply?

That's exactly where having an IBCLC and a Registered Dietitian under one roof makes all the difference. We look at both your breastfeeding mechanics and your nutrition — together — in a way no other North County practice does. Postpartum nutrition counseling is also covered by select PPO insurances.

I had a complicated relationship with food during pregnancy. Will there be diet talk?

Never. We are a strictly non-diet, HAES-aligned practice. No calorie counting, no 'bounce-back' talk, no weight goals. Our founder, Jaren, has personal experience with diet culture and built this practice specifically to offer a shame-free alternative. You are safe here.

Do I need a referral to book?

No referral is needed. Simply fill out the quick form and our client care coordinator will reach out to confirm your insurance and get you scheduled. If you're having a painful or urgent feeding issue, let us know and we'll prioritize your appointment.

How soon can I get an appointment?

We aim to see urgent lactation cases within 1–3 business days. Telehealth appointments often have faster availability. Once you submit the form, our team will contact you within one business day to get things moving.
